Black men hair styles??????????

Now, my boyfriend is always telling me how he is tired of shape ups because they cause his hair line to receed. He usually wears his hair cut low. I was wondering if anyone knew hairstyles that require less shape ups but can still be worn for professional occasions. He doesn't want to wear dreads, but I was wondering what else is out there for black men in hair care.

Growing his hair out to braid. Do a fro. Or maybe he can grow it out a tad and but a curl activator in it to make it curly.
