In Jesus Days, What is the primary reason for the long length of a mans hair and/or the beard?

Why could not Absalom not free himself when he was caught in the branches of the tree?In Jesus Days, What is the primary reason for the long length of a mans hair and/or the beard?
Among many ancient peoples of the East, including the Israelites, a beard was cherished as an evidence of manly dignity. God’s law to Israel prohibited the cutting off of the “sidelocks,” the hair between the ear and the eye, and the extremity of the beard. (Le 19:27; 21:5) This was doubtless because among some pagans it was a religious practice.

During extreme grief, shame, or humiliation, a man might pluck hairs from his beard, or he might leave the beard or the mustache untended. (Ezr 9:3) It may have been the untended beard of Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan, that indicated to David that Mephibosheth was perhaps telling the truth when he said that his servant Ziba had slandered him, and that Mephibosheth was actually mourning while David was a refugee from Absalom, contrary to what Ziba had reported. (2Sa 16:3; 19:24-30) The removing of the beard illustrated calamity or great mourning because of calamity.—Isa 7:20; 15:2; Jer 48:37; Eze 5:1.In Jesus Days, What is the primary reason for the long length of a mans hair and/or the beard?
Beards and long hair were traditional.

As to not being able to free himself, God was teaching a lesson. It was simply a means to an end.

Perhaps he lacked a knife as scizzors hadn't yet been invented.

Here's a study link you might enjoy.
I would think that barbers weren't common.
Appearance wasn't important
Actually most Jews wore their hair short at that time period, since long hair was associated with Greek/Pagan culture.
easy....Jeebus was a hippy.....and the Absalom dude had no arms.....ten points pleeze?
only fashion
it was religiously accepted.
without tools that we have now a days, it was harder to shave and trim your hair in those days.
Maybe because before...men weren't used to looking good...

It didn't matter before...

People looked at anothers heart to see if that person is beautiful...
